321 Stainless Steel Foil: Properties, Applications & Advantages

Contents

321 stainless steel foil is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel well known for its strength, corrosion resistance, durability, and high-temperature performance. The addition of titanium helps prevent carbide precipitation during welding or prolonged heat exposure, ensuring excellent intergranular corrosion resistance and long-term stability. This foil offers flexibility, precision, and uniform thickness, making it suitable for applications that demand both performance and reliability.

Its outstanding thermal stability allows it to maintain mechanical strength even under extreme temperatures, while its resistance to oxidation and corrosive media makes it ideal for harsh industrial environments. As a result, 321 stainless steel foil is widely used in demanding applications such as aerospace components, exhaust systems, heat shields, chemical processing equipment, furnace liners, and flexible seals. Its combination of formability, durability, and high-temperature resistance makes it a preferred choice for engineers working in critical and high-performance industries.

Chemical Composition & Stabilization

321 stainless steel foil consists of titanium, which is specifically added to form the stable titanium carbides. Table 01 shows the chemical composition of 321 stainless steel foil. The addition of titanium is necessary to avoid the formation of chromium carbides and preserve the chromium in solid solution. Titanium has a strong affinity with carbon, and it forms the stable titanium carbides at high temperatures.

Due to titanium stabilization, 321 stainless steel foil exhibits excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion. Unlike non-stabilized austenitic stainless steels, it does not suffer from chromium depletion at grain boundaries when exposed to temperatures in the sensitization range. This makes 321 stainless steel foil highly reliable for applications involving thermal cycling, heat treatment, and high-temperature operation.

Mechanical & Thermal Properties

321 stainless steel foil offers good tensile strength, toughness, and formability. Its austenitic structure provides excellent ductility and resistance to impact, allowing it to be easily formed into thin, complex shapes without cracking. Its titanium stabilization allows the high temperature stainless steel foil to maintain structural integrity during prolonged exposure to heat, making it suitable for high temperature service conditions. The high-temperature stainless steel foil retains creep resistance at elevated temperatures.

The chromium content in the 321 stainless steel foil forms a stable and protective oxide layer on the surface. The titanium stabilization enhances performance during continuous and cyclic heating. This combination ensures long-term durability in oxidizing atmospheres such as exhaust systems, heat shields, and thermal insulation applications.

Typical Applications

321 stainless steel foil, also known as titanium-stabilized stainless steel foil, is widely used across industries where high temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and corrosion stability are critical. Some common applications include:

1) Heat Exchangers: Due to excellent thermal stability and resistance to intergranular corrosion, titanium-stabilized stainless steel foil is used in high-temperature and corrosive environments.

2) Aerospace Components: It is used in engine parts and structural components exposed to extreme heat and thermal cycling.

3) Exhaust and Thermal Systems: It is ideal for automotive and industrial exhaust manifolds, heat shields, and thermal barriers operating at elevated temperatures.

4) Chemical Processing Equipment: It is used in reactors and flexible connections where resistance to corrosive media and high temperatures is essential.

5) Furnace and Heat-Treatment Components: Due to excellent thermal stability and resistance to intergranular corrosion, it is suitable for furnace liners, radiant tubes, and protective foils.

6) Seals and Gaskets: It is used in flexible metal seals and gaskets where thin, formable, and stable material is essential, making this foil ideal for such applications.

321 vs 304 vs 316 Stainless Steel Foil

321 stainless steel foil is specifically designed for high-temperature applications. Its titanium stabilization prevents carbide precipitation, ensuring excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion during prolonged heat exposure and thermal cycling.

The 304 stainless steel foil is a cost-effective and versatile material widely used for general-purpose applications. It has limited performance in high-temperature environments due to the risk of sensitization.

316 stainless steel foil is alloyed with molybdenum, providing enhanced corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride-rich and marine environments. It is more expensive and does not match the high-temperature stability of 321 stainless steel foil. Table 2 shows the temperature service range and cost performance analysis of 321, 304, and 316 stainless steel foil.

Thickness Range & Processing

321 stainless steel foil is available in a wide range of thicknesses, typically from 0.02 mm to 3.0 mm. The thinner foils provide excellent flexibility and formability for precision components, while thicker foils offer higher strength and durability for structural or high-temperature applications.

321 stainless steel foil is produced through a combination of cold rolling, annealing, and surface finishing processes. The cold rolling reduces thickness to the desired gauge while improving mechanical properties and surface finishing. The annealing is done to stabilize the material, relieve internal stresses, and enhance ductility. The surface finishing processes, including bright annealed (BA), dull finish, or mirror finish, can be done to meet functional requirements.

Conclusion

Choose 321 stainless steel foil for applications involving high temperatures and thermal cycling. It is ideal when resistance to intergranular corrosion and oxidation is required. Select it over 304 or 316 when high temperature strength is critical. It works best in aerospace, exhaust systems, heat exchangers, and chemical processing. Overall, 321 stainless steel foil is the reliable choice for demanding and heat-exposed environments.  Contact Jianglin Steel today to secure the high-performance 321 stainless steel foil your project demands.
