Outside Diameter

OD controls fit with couplings, ferrules, clamps, bending dies, tube sheets and other mating components. Define whether the requirement applies to average OD, any measured diameter, or both. Measurements may need to be taken at more than one orientation and location, especially near tube ends.

Wall Thickness

Wall thickness affects pressure design, weight, forming response and weld preparation. Do not assume that nominal wall equals the minimum permitted wall. State whether the order is controlled by a nominal wall with the standard’s permitted variation, a project minimum wall, or a tighter bilateral tolerance.

Ovality

Ovality describes the difference between maximum and minimum OD at the same cross-section. It matters when material must pass through a close fitting, enter a tube sheet, rotate in a fixture or maintain a consistent weld gap. If ovality is critical, define how it is calculated and where it is measured.

Cut Length

Specify random length, mill length or exact cut length. Exact lengths may require a separate tolerance and an allowance for facing, deburring or subsequent fabrication. For container loading or automated assembly, also confirm bundling and maximum piece length.

Straightness

Straightness affects alignment, orbital welding, tube-in-tube assembly and feeding through production equipment. A useful requirement identifies the gauge length or full-length basis and the maximum permitted deviation rather than using only the word “straight.”

End Condition and Surface Finish

End requirements may include square cut, bevel geometry, burr removal, end protection or weld preparation. Surface requirements can include pickling and passivation, mechanical polishing, internal roughness limits or protection against handling damage. Include these items in the first RFQ.

ASTM A312 vs ASTM A269: What the Buyer Should Specify

ASTM’s A01.10 subcommittee lists A312/A312M for seamless, welded and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipe, and A269/A269M for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service. Check the official ASTM A01.10 standards list and cite the required edition in the purchase order.

ASTM A312 is normally the starting point when the item is pressure pipe purchased by NPS and schedule. ASTM A269 is normally the starting point for general-service tubing purchased by OD and nominal wall. The standard name alone is not a complete RFQ: the buyer must still state grade, construction, dimensions, length, finish, heat-treatment condition, test or certificate requirements and any tighter project tolerances.

Manufacturing Route and Finish Affect Dimensional Variation

Seamless, welded, cold-finished and heavily cold-worked products do not have identical production histories. Welding, heat treatment, sizing, drawing, straightening, pickling and polishing can each change the final dimensional distribution. A tighter requirement may be feasible, but it can require additional passes, sorting or inspection.

Inspection, Records, and Acceptance

Dimensional inspection is distinct from nondestructive testing (NDT). OD, wall, length, ovality and straightness can be checked with calibrated micrometers, calipers, gauges, tapes or suitable dimensional systems. Ultrasonic thickness measurement is an NDT method, while eddy-current, hydrostatic and other tests may be required by the applicable product standard or project specification.

The order should define who inspects, what instruments or methods are acceptable, how many pieces and locations are checked, how results are recorded, and what happens if a sample fails. Material test reports confirm specified material and test data, but they do not replace a dimensional inspection report when the project requires one.

For critical assemblies, provide the mating-part drawing or a control plan. Supplier review before production is less expensive than sorting finished stock against an unstated fit requirement.
