Outokumpu, headquartered in Espoo, Finland, started out way back in 1910. It all began when someone found copper ore in Finland, on a hill called Outokumpu – that means “strange hill.” The actual company, Outokumpu Kopparwerk, got going in 1914; it was a team effort between the Finnish government and the private folks who owned the land.
At first, the company just focused on digging up and processing copper. Things changed quite a bit over the years, though. Early on, the mining was pretty small.
